Foundation and destruction of the original building

3 World Trade Center, or 3 WTC, is a skyscraper built as a part of the new World Trade Center. It is located in Lower Manhattan at 175 Greenwich Street.

Before we tell you about the modern building, it is worth remembering the original one. First of all, in 1979, construction of the 22-story hotel building with 825 rooms began on the west side of The World Trade Center. It was initially called the Vista International Hotel and later the Marriott World Trade Center. The building was designed by the architectural company Skidmore, Owings & Merrill. The hotel opened on July 1, 1981, but its existence ended in the tragic terrorist period of September 11, 2001.

Construction of a modern building

After the terrorist attack, urban planning organizations set about restoring the lost buildings. These are not only 3 World Trade Center but also the 2 World Trade Center, 4 World Trade Center, etc. In 2006, the British-Italian architect Richard Rogers, who worked for Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners Ltd., was chosen to design the new 3 World Trade Center. The architects of other buildings were Norman Foster and Fumihiko Maki.

Construction began later than planned, in 2010. The very process lasted rather slowly due to the lack of an anchor tenant. The construction stabilized only in 2014, after the GroupM advertising company had become the anchor tenant. In 2015, the building reached its final height of 1,079 feet (329 m). In August 2016, the concrete core of the building was built and on October 6, 2016, the steel structures were erected. The glass facade was completed in August 2017. The construction was entirely finished in 2018. The official opening of the skyscraper took place on June 11, 2018. Already at this point, 3 World Trade Center had a lot of tenants, approximately 38 percent. At that time, the premises of 3 World Trade Center were leased to such companies as Asana Inc, Better.com, Uber, Kelley Drye & Warren LLP, Cozen O’Connor, Hudson River Trading, Casper Sleep, Diageo, Blue Wolf Capital Partners, Index Exchange, Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, etc.

Modern аrchitecture

As we noted above, the 3 World Trade Center building was designed by Richard Rogers from Rogers Stirk Harbor + Partners company. The engineering component of the building was handled by the WSP Global enterprise. In general, the skyscraper has 80 above-ground floors and a height of 1079 feet (329 m). On the ground floors as well as in the basement and cellar premises, there are commercial institutions. The rest are mostly offices. As for the facade, it consists of double glass panels.

The major part of the facade is a hinged wall with 10 thousand panels of annealed glass, which are more resistant to destruction in comparison to traditional glass panels. The eastern and western levels of the facade contain K-shaped reinforcement, which consists of diagonal beams covered with stainless steel. The roof of the building is flat, although a somewhat convex shape was initially planned.

3 World Trade Center as a whole covers 2.5 million square feet (230,000 m/sq). Each of the floors of the building covers from 30 thousand to 70 thousand square feet (from 2,800 to 6,500 sq. m). In addition to that, approximately 24 thousand tons of steel and 145 thousand cubic yards (111,000 cub. m) of concrete were used in the construction. The height of the ceilings in the building ranges from 13 to 24 feet (4.0-7.3 m).
